Hey! I’m Aurelia, and I must confess…
I once got irrationally angry at a cupcake…
It was 2012, and I’d been baking & selling cupcakes on Fridays while working full-time as an architectural technologist, so I was obsessed with cupcakes.
That weekend, I was back in my hometown for my friend Laura’s wedding.
Her bridal shower was a BIG deal — one of my very first friends to get married, and everyone was so excited for her (we’re talking many, many tears of joy)!
The setting was just beautiful. A lush, green botanical garden. A waterfall in the background. A gorgeous table, with a cupcake sitting on every plate.
I could not WAIT to eat that cupcake. It had bright pink frosting and a little green Smartie on top. Very cute… But something felt suspicious…
Then I unwrapped it…
Underneath the pretty polka-dot cupcake case was approximately three-quarters frosting and one-quarter cupcake 🫣
But hey, mayyybe it still tasted good? I took a bite…
Oh my hat. It was so dry, hard to chew, and insanely sweet…
It tasted as if someone had left a dishwashing sponge on the kitchen counter for two weeks – and then decided to frost it!
I was angry at the cupcake for about two seconds. Then I got angry at the venue.
I kept thinking: “DON’T THEY CARE?!
For Pete’s sake! This is my friend’s ONE and ONLY bridal shower. A once-in-a-lifetime celebration!”
That’s when something clicked for me… Cake isn’t just sweet & cute food.
Cake carries sacred moments…
… a bridal shower,
… a mother-daughter date,
… a graduation that happened against all odds,
… a birthday that almost didn’t happen,
… catching up with a dear friend
… surviving a tough day
Cake’s supposed to ADD to the joy. Cake should give your taste buds a chance to join the fullness of the moment you’re in (just like clinking glasses lets your ears join in the experience of wine).
As I was forcing myself to swallow that sad excuse for a cupcake, I kept thinking… “I wish I’d been here yesterday! I would’ve loved to bake something truly delicious & special for Laura’s bridal shower…
Something that was made on purpose, with care. Not just to ‘charge extra per person.’”
That was over a decade ago. And I honestly still think about that cupcake.
Because it completely changed the way I see baking…
I don’t just bake super delicious treats.
I bake for the people eating them.
I bake for the moments people carry with them in their memories, all their lives.
And those moments deserve something that’s made with care… that tastes EVEN BETTER than it looks. Those moments require glorious flavour – not excessive sweetness.
